Today I decided to do something different than what I have been doing the past few months and go out on a hike. It was about 65 degrees without a cloud in the sky. Living in the city is really fun, but sometimes its nice it get out even if its just a day to admire what other parts of the state or country have to offer.
I decided to go out with some friends to hike Mount Cardigan up in northern New Hampshire. It took us about 4 hours total, two hours each way to get up and down. I have been into hiking since I was a little kid so this is nothing extremely new for me, but its also not something I do regularly so when I do get to get out on a hike I can really appreciate it. This mountain range is part of the Appalachian Mountains and it has an elevation of 3,156 ft. We hit three different peaks on our journey and took the West Ridge Trail. Its the end of April so there was still quite a bit of snow on the mountain which made it more of an obstacle, but I love a challenge so it was totally worth it.

It Give You A New Perspective
For some of us we work and we tend to stick to a routine and stay near places that are close to home. Getting out where there are not as many people and very different views can be a great change of pace. Sometimes its nice to take a step back and appreciate the little things. Its not everyday you hike to the top of a mountain and lookout to see miles of mountain range. When I look outside my window at my apartment, I see more apartments, its a little different. There is nothing like standing at the top of a 3,000 ft. mountain and just feeling at peace with yourself and your surroundings.
A Great Way To Bond With Friends And Family
There isn’t a better way to get to know someone than traveling or hiking with them. I think its great because you can turn down the technology and just be in the present. You don’t have to worry about the outside world for a while so the stress or work or other things isn’t getting to you, and lets be real there service isn’t really that great either so there is really no need. Its a great way to spend time with your friends and do something new.
It’s A Great Workout!
The average person burns about 400 calories per hour hiking. This is way better than the usual gym workout especially when you’re hiking for 5 or 6 hours. It is a great way to get extra exercise in. You also use a ton of muscles you wouldn’t usually use on a regular day to day basis. Hiking builds strength in your glutes, quads, hamstrings and in your hips and lower legs. Hiking is also an amazing core workout. The energy you use hiking helps to prevent cardiovascular disease and will help to lower high cholesterol.
Overall, the benefits of hiking are incredible and if you can get out a few times a year to go do it then it is great for your overall health and wellness!
