In lieu of the Boston marathon today I figured a running post would be quite fitting.
When you hear the phrase “let’s go for a run” it will either excite you or intimidate you. Running is one of the cheapest yet most effective forms of exercise however many of us are reluctant to do it simply because it isn’t something we are used to doing. Running is one of those things that can seem daunting at first, but I promise you once you get in a habit of making it part of your everyday lifestyle and slowly increase your weekly mileage it will become something you enjoy doing more.
When I first began running a few years back I would have been happy to have ran a mile. I would find myself getting tired running the three mile loop around the lake in my hometown. If could do this in less than thirty minutes it was a great day. I decided that I wanted to start challenging myself more and I entered a 5 mile race with my dad and brother. This was a challenge for me to accomplish but once I made that my goal it didn’t seem so hard because I kept pushing myself. Two years ago I ran my first half marathon and last spring I ran a full marathon. This is something I would have never imagined being able to accomplish when I was younger.
I am not saying that everyone has to start becoming a long distance runner, what I am suggesting is that anyone whether you have ran competitively your entire life, or if you have never even ran a mile without stopping you can become a runner. There are many benefits running has to offer, here are what I believe to be the five most impactful benefits of running.
Running Will Help You Lose Weight
This may not come as a surprise to most, but running will help you to burn calories causing tremendous weight loss results. In a study regarding weight loss it is proven that calories burned through running cause 90% more weight loss than calories burned through walking. Increasing your speed is a great way to keep up with weight loss so if you are looking to shred a few pounds taking up running is a great way to do that.
When you run there are two chemicals released by your brain called endorphins and endocannabinoids. These chemicals are proven to be just as effective as some drugs when it comes to how it alters your mood. It can make you just as happy as some drugs would, but the best part is its all natural and you aren’t putting any harmful substances into your body!
You Just Need Sneakers and You Are Ready To Go
The great thing about running is that you can do it whenever you want where ever you want. You don’t have to worry about buying expensive gym memberships you just need your sneakers. Just put on some workout clothes, lace up your shoes and start running. You can also explore new areas this way while getting a workout in, it’s like killing two bird with one stone!
No matter what is going on in your life running can always help you get through it. If you are stressed about work, or something going on in your family it is nice to take some time for yourself and clear your mind. That time you spend on your run is great alone time that you sometimes need in order to calm down. It will help you feel better and can also give you a better perspective on how to deal with the current situation that has brought you the stress. Sometimes you get so hyped up in the moment so taking some time to yourself and going for a run will help to alleviate the stress.
You Can Do It Alone or With Friends
Running is great because you can do it individually however it is also a great way to catch up with friends or socialize with others. It all depends on your personal preference. Running with others can help to motivate you to push yourself. There are times that you might not want to work out, but if you and your friends motivate each other it will make it easier for everyone. It’s one of those low maintenance exercises that you can do what you want with it, whether it’s just going for a nice long run by yourself for some alone time or having a friendly competition with your friends.
